Primates are social animals. Old World troops have from 30 to 100 members. As for New World species, their groups usually consist of 20 members maximum. Family groups, multi-male groups and one-male groups comprise the three kinds of social monkey groups. Some species tend to make nice companions. For example, Capuchin monkeys are used as therapy pets, as long as they possess an enviable intelligence. Their lucid mind permits them to use various household tools, such as electric appliances and microwave ovens. However, mature primates are not usually good home companions because they are meant for life in the wild.

The new world species (platyrrhines) are small to medium-sized. They have wide circular nostrils and long tails, which are prehensile or semi-prehensile. They do not have cheek pouches and buttock pads. Prehensile tails can be called an extra hand that helps swing, touch and grasp things. Old world species (catarrhines) are larger in size, and can be found in Africa and Asia. While platyrrhines are mainly arboreal, catarrhines can be semi-terrestrial. These two infraorders have evolved independently for 30,000,000 years and can be distinguished by the form of their noses and dentition.
