Monkeys are social animals. Old World troops have from 30 to 100 members. As for New World monkeys, their groups usually consist of 20 members. Family groups, multi-male groups and one-male groups comprise the three kinds of social monkey groups. It is important to know all the requirements of such animals before you decide to buy them. In general, monkeys are no great pets, because they are not fit for domestic life. However, some species, like Capuchin monkeys, are very intelligent and communicative, and can even be used as therapy animals. Adult monkeys are usually destructive and may show sudden outbursts of aggression. Therefore, many human-monkey relationships end in failure and animals land up in sanctuaries.

Monkeys are some of the animals, which some animal lovers prefer keeping as pets. The new world species (platyrrhines) are small to medium-sized. They have wide circular nostrils and long tails, which are prehensile or semi-prehensile. Their noses are flat, and the nasal openings are separated by a wide septum. Old World monkeys have narrower noses, and nostrils are separated by a narrow septum and directed downwards.
